COLUMBUS, OHIO — Ohio State police say an attacker on campus purposely drove over a curb and into pedestrians and then got out of the vehicle and began stabbing people with a butcher knife.
Eight people were injured in the attack. They were transported to OSU Wexner Medical Center, OhioHealth Grant Medical Center and OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital.
Police Chief Craig Stone spoke early Monday afternoon at a news conference.
Authorities also said police believe that there was only one attacker. Ohio State said earlier that the suspect had been shot and killed.
The university had sent out a series of tweets at around 10 a.m. Monday saying there was an active shooter on campus and that shooters should run, hide or fight. About an hour and a half later, the university said a shelter-in-place warning had been lifted and the scene was secure.
Authorities said later that it doesn’t appear that the suspect used a gun in the attack.
The campus will remain open, but classes will be canceled for the rest of the day.
A shelter-in-place warning has been lifted.
Witnesses reported a frightening, chaotic scene.
“I heard like multiple gunshots. And I wasn’t sure if it was real or not, but as soon as I looked out the window, when I saw the scene I knew it was really happening,” said Yoon Lee, OSU student.
“It’s not real. You go numb. It’s not supposed to happen. Sorry. Um, so yeah, it’s um, it’s scary. It’s really scary. We barricaded ourselves in our rooms like we were taught. Turned off our lights. And just hunkered down,” said Rachelle Lemaster, university employee. “A lot of people running. A lot of people running.”
“I went to ask if I could move my van, and, um, there’s a body outside the loading dock. I guess I’m under the idea that it was one of the shooters. So, yep, there is a victim,” she said.
