The Mick’s gather around Zoey, finally home after a long journey from South Carolina, home

COLUMBUS — It took Zoey six months and several hundred miles to find her way home. But Sunday night, thanks to the chip in her shoulder and the help of several volunteers, she found her way back to Indiana.

Amy Mick, her daughter and grandson waited in a Columbus parking lot just off Interstate 65 for the big reunion.

“I’m excited and nervous,” Amy said as she sat in her SUV. “A person found her in South Carolina and connected us. It was a shock, really, really surprising.”

Zoey, a seven-year-old Jack Russell terrier, had been tethered in Mick’s yard last June and somehow was taken or let loose.

The family looked for her and checked area shelters with no luck. Then out of the blue, comes the call. Zoey is in Lundrum, S.C.

“When (the woman) said South Carolina, that just blew my mind. From Indiana to there? I can’t imagine,” Amy said.

And then they saw the van pull in.

“I’m excited and nervous,” Amy said choking up.

When the van door opened, Janet Sutter got out with Zoey in her arms, her tail wagging so fast it was a blur. They all hugged and got teary-eyed, except for Zoey who couldn’t stop licking Amy.

“I’m so glad you got her back for Christmas,” Janet said.

“You made our Christmas. You have no idea what this means to us,” Amy said, then turning to Zoey. “Oh, I missed you so much.”

The Mick’s will never know how Zoey wound up more than 500 miles from home. But they do know that someone there found her and brought her to a vet who scanned her and found a micro-chip, paving the way for Zoey’s trip home.

Janet said, “Just think, a computer chip in her could save this baby and bring it all the way back home.”

Janet and her husband Bob, are part of a network of volunteers that transports rescued animals to new homes or in this case, back home.

The Sutters were among eight people who drove an hour and a half each to help get Zoey back to to Indiana.

For Janet, it couldn’t have come at a better time.

“My husband’s been ill, my mom’s ill, my aunt’s ill and I had no Christmas spirit until I got the call to transport this baby,” she said. “Just knowing I as going to make a Christmas miracle happen and get her back to her mama makes my heart happy.”

It all made for a lucky dog and and a very grateful family.
